WHIRL
What is WHIRL?
WHIRL is Wetware Hardware Ireland, an organisation dedicated to giving Ireland's technical builders the community, tools, and resources they need to bring their ideas to life. WHIRL provides this in the form of a combined workshop & laboratory, complete with all the equipment and materials needed to realise your designs.
Why now?
The world is moving faster than ever. While the US and China race to innovate in the fields of manufacturing, medecine, and technology, Europe has been left to stagnate. We believe that the talent Europe needs to bridge this gap already exists, but lacks the necessary resources and support to make the most of their skills.
So where does WHIRL come in?
WHIRL is Ireland's first truly open-door makerspace, independent of universities and exclusionary clauses.
We believe that Ireland's recent success in the software industries (see Stripe, Tines, etc) warrants a response from our indigenous mechatronic & biotech builders. While software has raised no shortage of interest and capital in the form of hackathons, software start-ups, and all-island competitions, hardware has only just begun to catch up.
The recent explosion in popularity of college societies such as Formula Trinity, ULAS HiPr, and UCD's UAV team has demonstrated that there is interest amongst Ireland's young builders for hands-on, technical engineering projects. However, they typically need to rely on organisations like universities in order to operate.
We seek to enable the next generation of tinkerers, inventors, and founders to learn by doing, taking their ideas from notebooks to reality.
You've got my attention! How can I help / get involved?
If you'd like to work on projects at WHIRL, please fill out our survey to help us better understand what Irish builders want, if you're someone interested in supporting WHIRL or donating equipment, please email us at the address below.
